About Kira O Brien
One Summer ,when I was a child ,I remember my father had a plant trough full of flowerless earth that I filled with water and made little cups and plates from. I spent happy hours playing alone like this and it wasn’t until much later in life I would recollect this strange memory and remember how content the clay made me feel and how absorbed I was in my making . When I stumbled upon professional pottery wheel classes in my early twenties while living in Dublin I became even more absorbed and I remember thinking “I wish I could do this forever” . It was really something I came to love
Well fast forward to my thirties and I found myself in Cork with two kids taking life drawing and clay sculpture classes and a following three years in College learning all I could about the Art of clay and design
Now almost 20 years on I am so proud of all I have achieved and all the people who have inspired me to continue learning and developing my work
I have exhibited Nationally and Internationally solo and with other Ceramic and Visual Artists . My work has been jury selected Internationally such as Switzerland, Croatia and Montana and here as part of the RDS craft awards and many Gallery Spaces . You will find my work published in Magazines and Books . I have been commissioned to create bespoke pieces by people as far away as Japan and closer to home nationwide. I am truly blessed to have been part of so many collectives and Galleries down through the years ,others have taught me so much and I am constantly studying the History of Clay which I include in my workshops .
Now I turn my attention to teaching others how amazing a journey in Clay can be. I have had the privilege of teaching in schools and colleges ,working with very small kids to adolescents and older. More recently I’ve been working with Cork County Council ,libraries and community outreach programmes bringing the craft to people who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity. In the past I have also given workshops to children with special needs and I hope to continue this in some capacity this year. It’s all been a great joy ..the history ,the people ,making ,and learning about all you can create with some simple tools and of course….CLAY !
